The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is one of the most iconic natural treasures of Costa Rica. Located in the province of Guanacaste, this active volcano rises inside the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, a protected UNESCO World Heritage area known for its hot springs, waterfalls, jungle canyons, and unique volcanic activity. With nine craters and over 32 rivers flowing from its slopes, it is the largest and most diverse volcanic complex in the Guanacaste Mountain Range.

About Rincón de la Vieja Volcano – History, Legends & Natural Wonders

The name Rincón de la Vieja (“The Old Woman’s Corner”) comes from a famous Chorotega legend.
It is said that Princess Curubandá, the daughter of a local chief, fell in love with a young warrior from an enemy tribe. Her father, furious, threw the warrior into the volcano’s crater. Heartbroken, she retreated to the mountain, becoming a wise healer who lived alone near the volcano. The locals would visit “La Vieja” to seek cures, believing she possessed magical powers from the volcano itself.
This legend gives the volcano a mystical essence and connects today’s visitors to the ancestral history of the region.
