Why is the name of Curubanda significant in the local culture?
egend has it that Princess Curubanda fled in madness towards the volcano, after her father, Chief Curubandé, threw her beloved Prince Mixcoac, leader of an enemy tribe, into the crater. From their forbidden love, a child was born, who was also thrown into the crater by the princess to be reunited with his father. The crazed princess took refuge in the peaks forever.
Since then, Curubanda lived near the crater, aged, and became a famous healer. She learned secrets of healing with medicines obtained from the volcano, and when people went to seek her, they would say "I'm going to the old lady from the corner" or "I'm going to the corner of the old lady", alluding to the remoteness of her dwelling. There, she aged while healing many pilgrims with the powerful magic of the earth and the secrets of the forest.
