"The Evolution of La Leona Waterfall: A Local Legacy Connecting Curubandé to the World"
The Legend of Princess Curubanda

The Legend of Curubandá and the Sacred Heart of Rincón de la Vieja
The captivating legend of Curubandá is deeply woven into the fabric of Rincón de la Vieja, a majestic volcano in Costa Rica. According to the story, the beautiful Princess Curubandá fled to the volcano, heartbroken and driven mad, after her father, Chief Curubandé, cast her beloved Prince Mixcoac—leader of an enemy tribe—into the volcano’s crater. Their forbidden love had created a child, who too was cast into the volcanic depths by the grieving princess to reunite with his father.
Devastated and tormented, Princess Curubandá retreated to the high slopes of the volcano, where she lived out her days in solitude. Over time, she became a renowned healer, using the medicinal secrets of the volcano’s plants and the land’s magic. It’s said that when people sought her out for healing, they would say, "I’m going to the old woman in the corner" or "I’m going to the Rincón de la Vieja," referring to the remote, mystical place where she lived.
In her later years, Curubandá’s voice echoed through the forest, teaching the rivers and waterfalls to sing with the rhythm of her sorrow and solitude. Her enchanting presence infused the land with life, and it’s believed that the spirit of Curubandá still whispers in the dense forests, especially near the volcano’s summit and its magical pools and waterfalls.
The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano (1898 meters above sea level) is said to be where the spirits of Curubandá, Mixcoac, and their child still roam, transformed into butterflies that flutter between the trees. The heart of Curubandá, believed to be made of water, continues to pulse in the depths of the forest, casting its powerful magic to summon life in a timeless ritual.
This enchanting story gives Curubandá its unique connection to the land, its people, and the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. At Finca Curubandá, we invite you to experience this sacred and historical land firsthand. Our exclusive trails and tours offer an intimate connection with the volcano’s mystical beauty, its rich cultural history, and the unforgettable spirit of Curubandá.
