La Leona Waterfall flowing into a turquoise pool between canyon walls in Costa Rica.

La Leona Waterfall Costa Rica is a waterfall hidden inside a river canyon near Curubandé, a small community near Liberia and Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. Visiting it involves more than walking to a viewpoint: you follow the river, cross rocky sections, pass through cave-like formations and enter the water to reach the waterfall.

At Finca Curubanda, we welcome visitors to the community where we live and work. Our guided routes begin on our property, with different options for travelers who prefer a shorter approach, a regular adventure hike or a more demanding experience.

This guide explains where to arrive, what the hike involves, what your tour includes and how to plan a day that suits your group.

Where Is La Leona Waterfall in Costa Rica?

La Leona Waterfall is located in the Curubandé area of Guanacaste, near Liberia and Rincón de la Vieja Volcano.

Curubandé is the community where visitors meet their guides and prepare for the waterfall adventure. From here, access routes follow the Río Blanco toward the canyon.

There are different operators and routes in the area, so your meeting point depends on the company you book with. Before driving, confirm the exact location shown in your reservation.

When you book with Finca Curubanda, you can arrange to meet at our main office in the village or, with advance confirmation, drive directly to our finca.

What Is the La Leona Waterfall Hike Like?

The La Leona Waterfall hike is an active river adventure with moderate difficulty.

The route follows the riverside through forest and rocky terrain. Along the way, you may encounter slippery stones, roots, branches, uneven steps, cave passages and sections where you cross the river.

Some parts require using your hands for balance or holding a support rope. You will get wet, and reaching the waterfall involves entering the water inside the canyon.

Your local guide explains how to move through each section and where to place your feet or hold on.

Is the Hike Difficult?

The regular experience sits between an easy walk and a strenuous hike. It requires balance, attention and enough mobility to move over uneven ground.

A shorter route reduces the amount of walking, but it still includes wet, rocky terrain and water access. It should not be confused with a flat or fully accessible path.

Tell us before booking if anyone in your group has limited mobility, a recent injury or concerns about swimming. This helps us explain the route and assess whether the experience is suitable.

Swimming Into the Canyon

One of the most memorable parts of the visit is approaching the waterfall through the canyon.

Visitors wear life jackets and follow their guide’s instructions, using the fixed support rope where directed. The current and water level affect how this section feels on any given day.

If you are not confident in the water, let us know before your visit. A life jacket provides flotation, but it does not remove the physical demands of moving through a river.

Choose Your La Leona Waterfall Route

Finca Curubanda offers three guided route options. The right choice depends on your available time, comfort in the water and interest in a more adventurous hike.

Regular Route

The regular route offers a combination of riverside walking, crossings, rocky passages and time in the water before reaching La Leona.

It suits visitors looking for the full experience of hiking through the river landscape at a guided pace, with opportunities to stop and enjoy the surroundings.

Short-Access Route

The short-access route offers a more direct approach for visitors who prefer less walking.

It still includes the essential canyon experience and requires moving over uneven terrain. This option can be useful when you have limited time or want to focus your visit on reaching the waterfall.

Ask our team about the expected walking distance and duration when booking.

Extreme Route

Our extreme route adds more demanding sections and additional adventure features, such as rock climbs, a natural slide and optional jumps when conditions allow.

It is designed for visitors who want a more physical experience and feel comfortable following instructions in wet, uneven terrain.

Tell your guide if you prefer to skip a feature. Activities depend on the river conditions and the route operating that day.

How Much Does La Leona Waterfall Cost?

Finca Curubanda waterfall options start at approximately US$25 per person.

The final price depends on your chosen route, package and any extras you add. A waterfall-only reservation will differ from a day that also includes tubing, an ATV tour, lunch or hot springs.

When requesting a quote, share:

  • Your preferred date and departure time.

  • The number of adults and children.

  • Your preferred route.

  • Any additional activities or meals.

  • Whether you need transportation.

Ask for the final total and payment conditions before confirming so you know exactly what your reservation includes.

What to Bring to La Leona Waterfall

Pack for a hike where your clothes and shoes will get wet.

Footwear for Wet, Uneven Terrain

Wear shoes that fit securely and provide grip on wet surfaces.

Depending on their design and condition, suitable options can include:

  • Water shoes with a sturdy sole.

  • Closed-toe water sandals, such as suitable Keen models.

  • Secure hiking sandals with heel straps, such as suitable Chaco models.

  • Running or trail shoes that you are comfortable getting wet.

Choose footwear based on grip and support rather than brand alone. Thin, smooth-soled water shoes may offer little protection on rocky sections.

Avoid flip-flops and loose slip-on sandals, which can come off in the water and provide limited stability.

  • Hiking sandals with secure heel straps for walking through wet and rocky terrain.
  • 10. Athletic shoes suitable for getting wet during the La Leona Waterfall tour.
  • Water shoes with textured soles for the La Leona Waterfall hike.

What to Carry on the Hike

Keep your trail belongings small and manageable:

  • A reusable water bottle.

  • Your phone, protected from water.

  • A small snack or piece of fruit.

  • Essential personal items.

We provide a dry bag, but keep electronics inside an additional waterproof case if possible. Close the bag properly and follow your guide’s instructions.

Keep food packed away, take all waste back with you and never feed wildlife.

What to Leave for After the Tour

Bring these items and leave them in your vehicle or ask our team about storage:

  • A towel.

  • Dry clothes.

  • Extra footwear.

  • A bag for wet clothing.

After the hike, you can use the showers and changing facilities before continuing your day.

When Is the Best Time to Visit La Leona Waterfall?

December through April is generally the best period for visitors seeking drier conditions in Guanacaste. Seasonal transitions vary, and river conditions still need to be assessed on the day of your tour.

At Finca Curubanda, we recommend an early start when possible. Our first departure is at 7:30 a.m., leaving more time to enjoy the visit and arrange another activity afterward.

What About June and July?

You can have sunny periods during these months, but June and July are part of the rainy season. June can be particularly wet in Guanacaste, while July sometimes brings a relative break in rainfall. Neither month guarantees dry weather.

Before traveling, ask our team about recent rain, current river conditions and whether your selected route is operating.

Is the Water Always Blue?

No. La Leona’s water can appear blue or turquoise, but its appearance changes with lighting, water clarity and recent rainfall.

Rain can carry sediment into the river, making the water less clear or brown. A sunny day alone does not guarantee turquoise water, especially after heavy rainfall.

Ask for a recent conditions update if the water’s appearance is an important part of your planning.

What Happens When the River Is Too High?

Our team monitors the river and weather conditions. If the river exceeds our operating threshold, tours are suspended until conditions have been reassessed and are suitable for operation.

A reservation does not override river conditions. If your departure is affected, contact our team to discuss the available arrangements.

Can You See Wildlife During the Hike?

You may see monkeys, birds, butterflies and other animals along the forested sections of the route.

Wildlife sightings vary with animal activity, weather, noise and timing. Your guide can help point out animals that are visible during the walk, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Walk quietly, keep your distance and avoid feeding or touching wildlife.

For visitors interested in photography, tell your guide that you would like to look for animals along the way. Keep your phone or camera protected during river crossings.

Combine La Leona Waterfall with Other Activities

A waterfall visit can be the main activity of your day or part of a longer itinerary around Curubandé and Rincón de la Vieja.

Finca Curubanda can help you plan combinations based on your interests, available time and the conditions that day.

La Leona Waterfall and River Tubing

Combine the waterfall hike with river tubing for a day focused on the water.

The waterfall and tubing take place in different river settings, so conditions are assessed separately. Confirm the order of activities and the estimated total duration when booking

  • Sunlight entering the canyon above the turquoise river at La Leona Waterfall.
  • Visitors wearing helmets and life jackets while river tubing on the Colorado River in Guanacaste
  • Visitors holding a support rope while moving through the La Leona Waterfall canyon.

La Leona Waterfall and an ATV Tour

An ATV combination adds an off-road experience around the Curubandé and Rincón de la Vieja area.

It is an option for visitors who want to experience both the canyon on foot and the surrounding countryside by vehicle. Ask about driver requirements, passenger options and the route included in your package.

  • Local guide accompanying visitors through the river toward La Leona Waterfall.
  • ATV riders exploring an off-road trail near Curubandé and Rincón de la Vieja.
  • Local guide accompanying visitors through the river toward La Leona Waterfall.

Add a Costa Rican Lunch

Adding lunch makes it easier to enjoy the day without arranging a separate restaurant stop.

Ask about a traditional Costa Rican casado and let us know about dietary needs in advance. Lunch is included only when specified in your selected package.

Waterfall and Hot Springs

Hot springs can provide a slower-paced activity after the hike.

Confirm which hot springs location is included, how you will travel there and whether meals or transfers form part of the arrangement.

  • Hot spring pools surrounded by tropical vegetation near Rincón de la Vieja, Costa Rica.
  • Visitors relaxing in thermal pools in the Rincón de la Vieja area of Guanacaste.
  • 1. Thermal pool with rock borders and surrounding greenery near Rincón de la Vieja.

Planning Around Hacienda Guachipelín or Cañón de la Vieja

If your itinerary includes Hacienda Guachipelín or Cañón de la Vieja, tell our team when planning your waterfall visit.

We can discuss how La Leona might fit into your day, allowing time for travel and separately scheduled activities. Admission, transportation and reservations at other venues must be confirmed; they are not automatically included in a waterfall ticket.
