What Makes This a Private Family Tour?
A private tour means your guide is assigned exclusively to your family. You will not be added to a larger group of travelers who booked separately.
This gives your guide more opportunity to explain each section, assist your children, and adjust the walking pace around your family’s needs. There is time to pause, ask questions, take pictures, and enjoy the surroundings.
Private does not mean exclusive use of the waterfall. Other visitors may be on the trails, in the river, or at La Leona Waterfall during your visit. The private part is your group and the guide accompanying you.
Whether you are visiting as one parent with a child, a family of four, or a larger family group, tell us how many people are coming so we can organize the appropriate guiding arrangements.

Local Knowledge and Personal Attention
Our guides know Curubandé and the route to the waterfall. Along the way, they can introduce you to the area and help your family navigate the more challenging sections.
If your family would prefer the tour in English, request a bilingual guide when making your reservation.
Is La Leona Waterfall Suitable for Children?
La Leona can be a rewarding experience for children who enjoy outdoor adventures, but it is a moderate hike with river crossings and swimming, rather than a simple walk to a viewpoint.
The regular route includes flatter stretches where families can enjoy walking together. It also includes slippery or uneven terrain and sections where children need close assistance.
Choosing a private guide allows us to give your family individual attention, but suitability still depends on each child’s needs and the conditions that day.

Visiting with Toddlers and Children Under 4
We have welcomed families with children ages 2 and 3 on private visits. However, every family should contact us before booking with a child under 4.
Tell us your child’s age, walking ability, and comfort around water. Younger children must remain closely accompanied by a parent and may need to be carried on walking sections. Carrying a child also makes the hike more demanding for the adult.
If you plan to bring a hiking carrier, discuss it with us beforehand. A carrier is not swimming equipment, and the river and swimming sections require separate planning with our team.
Children under 4 do not pay waterfall admission, but free admission does not mean that every child can complete every section. Participation must be discussed in advance, including suitable life-jacket fit and current river conditions.
Why We Use the Regular Route for This Family Experience
The regular route gives families time to experience the journey as well as the waterfall.
Along the way, you will encounter forest scenery, flatter trail sections, river crossings, rocky passages, and opportunities to enjoy the water when conditions allow.
Your guide helps your family through the parts that require more effort. For children, the changing scenery and different sections make the walk an adventure in itself.
Plan for approximately 2.5–3 hours. Your family does not need to keep up with a separate shared group. We allow room for breaks and individual assistance, while organizing the visit around river conditions, daylight, and the guide’s directions.

What to Expect During Your Family Visit
1. Meet Us at Finca Curubanda
Your visit begins at our reception in Curubandé centro. Search for Finca Curubanda on Google Maps and use the meeting location provided with your booking confirmation.
Our team welcomes your family, checks your reservation, and introduces you to your guide.
2. Get Ready with Your Guide
Before setting out, you receive your life jackets and instructions for the tour.
This is a good time to tell your guide if anyone is nervous around water, needs additional help, or has a concern about the hike. Life jackets are required for the swimming sections.
3. Travel to the Farm
From reception, you can continue to the farm in your own vehicle or use the 4×4 transportation we can provide. Confirm your preferred arrangement when booking.
Your guide will explain where to go and how the walking portion begins.
4. Explore the Trail and River
The hike combines walking with river crossings, rocky and cave-like passages, and swimming sections.
You will get wet, and some parts require physical effort. Your guide stays with your family, explains what comes next, and assists where needed.
5. Reach La Leona Waterfall
The final approach takes you through the river canyon, using a support rope in the water to reach the waterfall.
For many families, this is the most memorable part of the experience: arriving together at a waterfall hidden between the canyon walls.
After enjoying the waterfall as conditions allow, you return with your guide.
How We Monitor River Conditions
River conditions are an important part of planning any visit to La Leona Waterfall with kids.
Our team monitors conditions in the morning and afternoon and stays in communication with other local operators to share updates from the area.
Weather and river levels can affect departure times and whether the tour can proceed. During wetter periods, contact us before your visit for current information.
A private booking provides personal attention, but the tour must still follow the guide’s assessment of conditions.

Best Time to Visit La Leona Waterfall with Kids
December through April is generally the drier period in Guanacaste, making it a useful starting point when planning a family trip. Rain is still possible, and current conditions always matter.
September and October can bring heavier rainfall. Families visiting during these months should check with us about weather and river levels before setting out. November can also remain rainy as the region transitions toward the dry season.
Morning and Afternoon Departures
For many families, 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. is a convenient time to begin.
Afternoon departures around 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. may also be available, depending on conditions. If you are visiting with younger children or expect to need more breaks, discuss an earlier departure with us.
Reception opens at 7:30 a.m., and our last tour departure is 3:00 p.m., subject to the day’s conditions.

What to Bring for Your Family
Pack lightly so you can move comfortably and help your children when needed.
Bring:
Secure footwear with good grip that can get wet.
Swimwear and lightweight, quick-drying clothes.
A small bottle of water for each person.
A small towel for children who may feel cold after swimming.
A light snack, such as fruit or crackers, for an appropriate rest stop.
Dry clothes and a larger towel to use after the tour.
Avoid carrying a large, heavy towel throughout the hike. Keep your belongings manageable, and take all snack packaging and other waste back with you.
Before booking, ask our team about any equipment or arrangements your younger children may need.

Will our family share a guide with other visitors?
On this private family tour, your guide is assigned to your family. You will not be combined with other bookings in a shared hiking group.
Will there be other people at the waterfall?
There may be. Other groups visit the same natural attraction, so a private tour does not guarantee an empty trail or waterfall.
How long does the family tour take?
Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours. The pace includes time for assistance and breaks, with timing adjusted to conditions and daylight.
Can a 3-year-old visit La Leona Waterfall?
We have welcomed children of this age on private visits. Contact us before booking so we can discuss the child’s needs, equipment fit, parental assistance, and river conditions.
What ages qualify for the child price?
Children ages 4–12 pay $25 for the waterfall tour. Ages 13 and older pay $35. Children under 4 have no waterfall admission charge, subject to prior arrangements for participation.
Does my child need to know how to swim?
The route includes swimming sections where children may not be able to stand. Tell us before booking if your child cannot swim or is uncomfortable in water so we can assess the support needed and whether the visit is appropriate.
Life jackets and guide assistance are part of the experience, but swimming confidence and current conditions still matter.
What if my child gets tired or feels nervous?
Tell your guide immediately. The private format allows time for breaks and individual attention. If someone cannot continue, your guide will assess the appropriate next step based on your location and conditions.
Can we request an English-speaking guide?
Yes. Request a bilingual guide when booking so we can arrange one for your family.
What happens if it rains?
Our team checks weather and river conditions. Rain or changing water levels may affect the tour, so contact us for current information, especially during wetter months.
Where does the tour start?
